BOOM! [Apr. 25th, 2006|10:48 pm]

[mood | tired]

Woooooah I am soooo tired. Too many late nights since I started back here. I've been running around like a headless chicken for the past few days and already I feel like I need a vacation! I had to come back early on Thursday evening to finish my interactive flash animation/game project because I was having trouble stringing the scenes together with actionscipting, and had no idea how to make the elements I wanted in it "drag and droppable." Of course because I had done most of it on my own computer with a downloaded free-trial version of flash 8 I had problems using it on the macs in the studio. For some reason the writing I had done on it had disappeared. I was in the middle of doing it again when we got chucked off the computers on the front row because the tutors needed them for training (a guy came in and was teaching them how to use a state-of-the-art brand new 2D package called "Stage.") In it it looks like instead of having different moving parts for your characters etc you can manipulate just the one drawing like a puppet! That would save time on redrawing things but still... I feel technology is going so far it's as if the computers are doing all the work for you! Anyway so the only other computer that was available I had to move to for some reason flash wouldn't load on it! The icon just bounced up and down when you clicked on the big f and it did nothing! Those macs are screwy and each one seems to have its own wierd problems... So I had bugger all luck trying to get the work finished on the studio computers, what with them acting up and the lecturers being unavailable all day training. Rob showed me how to string the scenes together though, but didn't know how to do the dragging and dropping. He suggested looking up help on flash sites on the internet so I cut my losses and went back home (uni accomodation, not home home lol) to work it on the PC again. I found a script for dragging elements in flash which worked ok, it wasn't exactly what I wanted, but what I wanted was not only tricky in terms of action scripting but gave me a headache in just the way it was meant to pan out. The thing was, I had two wheels to go on the car in the flash game. The user was meant to click each one and drag them on, and they should snap fit to the right places. Then when they were put on it would go to the next scene. Now that would have been ok with just one wheel, but the problem with having two was that you didn't know what order the user would put them on in, so in terms of action scripting it would have been a nightmare. How would you programme it so that when wheel no.1 and wheelno.2 where put on it would go to the next scene (or when wheel no.2 and wheel no.1 were put on if they did it in the other order!) and also the problem of scripting it to make sure that it didn't go on to the next scene when only wheelno.1 or wheelno.2 was put on! Graggh! see what I mean??? In the end I worked with the script I found which enabled the user to click and drag the wheels wherever they wanted on the screen (and did not snap-fit to the right places) but they would presumably use their intelligence to place them over the right places. To move onto the next scene I added a button which said "click here when you're done!" hey presto, one less headache to worry about.
Ok enough of the techno-boring I almost forgot you can download it here! http://www.deviantart.com/view/32170224/
For some reason some bits take a while to load first time around (on my computer anyway) so if you play it again each bit should come up pretty much immediately. I hopes you like it if anyone's reading!
Ah yeah I was running around like a headless chicken the other day because of the dippy lecturers swopping and chopping their minds about deadlines. It said on the handout we got at the start that everything except the stop-motion animation was due in on Monday. Fine. I'd done all that. It also said that the stop motion was due in on the 29th, which I thought was Friday, but infact is Saturday, and we can't hand our work in on a Saturday :S 2pm was the deadline, and I found out about half past one from my friends. I had to go back home to re-put my Flash animation movie file on CD as I found out (luckily happened to decide to test it,) that it didn't work on the studio macs (what a surprise!) because I had exported it as a version 8, and their's is 6. Or 7. Or something. So I ran back and did it in both. It takes about 15 minutes to walk there, and 15 to walk back, so I got back just in time. I was going to challenge the deadline for the stop motion being yesterday (yesterday!) and brought back my A2 character board for it, thinking if they wanted it that day, they could have it, unfinished. Or they could give me till Friday which would be fair. The character board, annoyingly, I had purposely taken out of my portfolio the night before as I knew it wasn't in 'till Friday and the 'folio was now sitting in the animation studio with the work which truely was in for that day. I should have brought it back with me but it forgot. So I had to put it in a binbag incase it rained. I told my lecturer about the deadline and he said I could have 'till Friday to finish it with no marks deducted. Phew. But then later on I overhead him talking to one of my other lecturers who said she wanted it in for Wednesday. He said Friday, but she said the other other lecturer might not be around to collect the work on Friday, and so it was "his call" (the other other lecturer) whether or not we could hand it in then depending on if he would be around or not. That's the trouble with having 3 lecturers! They all have different ideas when things are due in it seems! So I'm going to get the outstanding stop-motion sketchbook work done and handed in for tomorrow. I'm all at sixes and sevens after these crazy mix ups! Then today I had problems trying to sort out a module registration form for next year which I meant to hand in before the holiday. I had already handed it in but found out on the final day that you have to get the signature of the tutor whose module you're applying for. I was so busy that day I completely forgot and ended up bringing the form home home with me. Doh! So I phoned the office and they told me to send it in to the guy who was meant to sign it. They told me he happened to be coming in the next day to collect some work so I sent it first class special delivery which cost 4 quid! with a note asking him to sign it. Today I tried to track him down to find out if he'd got it or not. I had left my mobile, home no. and email address on the note but he hadn't contacted me. I tried looking for him in the morning but he was out, one of the other lecturers said he'd be in later. So I buggered off home with 3 of my mates who came to play Soul Calibur II and super smash brothers and I played it with a steering wheel because we only had 3 controllers ha ha ha. Oh and I made spaghetti on toast for me and my mate before that (my other two friends had sandwiches.) Anyway we went back to the studio later and I went to look for the guy who was in but on the fone for ages. It was whilst I was sitting waiting for him that it suddenly dawned on me whether I had remembered to switch the cooker on the oven off after making the spaghetti... This really started to nag me so I RAN back home worrying if I would catch glimpse of the kitchen on fire or something! But, as you would expect with sod's law (and, well luckily!) it WAS off. Phew. I had switched it off. Either that or someone else on my corridor had done.... So then I had to go back to the studio AGAIN. Phew. I saw the guy and he hadn't got it. That 4 quid for nothing. Bleh. So I got another module registration form from the animation office and filled it in. This time I checked with my lecturer whether the combination of the 2 modules I had chosen was ok, and they weren't, so getting that bloke to sign was pointless anyway! I don't understand all this "Teaching block" stuff anyway it was lucky he was about to help me. I had to compromise on the selection. I wanted to do digital illustration (sounded like a skive plus I could do with some lessons in photoshop and the like) and the animation "client" brief which is where some company like the BBC give you something like for instance some voices or something and you have to animate characters for it. I thought it would be good to have something given to you for a change, saving time having to come up with some divine inspiration, and it's good practice for the working world of animation where you have to make what other people want, unless you're directing your own movie, but I think you need to work your way up all the ranks for that!!!! I ended up doing the client module with "desktop animation" instead which is little flash animation type things I think. Shouldn't be toooo difficult. Ah then the night before the deadline just as I had finished my dinner I got a call from a mate who had just got back to uni and needed help with the action scripting of his flash animation. He was doing an alphabet game, you click A for apple and a picture of an apple comes up etc. I told him I wasn't an expert, but I went round anyway and we spent a good few hours perservering and swearing lots when lots of wierd things started happening in the programme when I got a rhythm going for it, doing the same process for each part and testing it, which worked fine, (A for apple, yessss that works ok, B for Bird, yep thats ok, C for cat....) until I got up to "D" for dog and put the script in and for some reason every letter from A to C showed a picture of the dog when you clicked it!!!! Graaaaaaaagh!!!! We got it sorted in the end though.
So yeah it's been pretty hectic. The thing is we're finished for the year now! We have no exams! Our lecturer is going to set us a project for the Summer though. I'm not sure how much I'll need to use the studio for it. He told my mate as a clue to "buy a mirror" so we're either doing something with expressions or lip-synching. I probably won't start it for a while, I think I'll stay here for a while, go home, enjoy most of the summer and come back to do it before we start again in September. Whilst I'm here now I think I might make use of the resources to make some of my own film off my own bat.... Yep you've guessed it, AFRO GOBLIN!!!! Oh yeah and I thought of having his car talk in it like Knight rider and my mate is going to do the voice of it ha ha ha. Won't start it for a day or two though. I feel like building a Gundam.... Mmmm Gundam. Cheap gundams taste so much better. I got one for £1.99 the other week!
Right I need go bed.

The Cheese Men are coming [Mar. 27th, 2006|07:02 pm]
[mood | Onaka suita!]
[music |Manic Street Preachers - The Everlasting]

Ooh I haven't updated here in a while. Nobody bothers reading anyway except Bethany who popped up and left a comment on the last post oddly enough... She disappeared years ago and I have not spoken to her since or been able to get in contact after she left that post... :S

Well not an awful lot has happened since the last time. I remade my burninated Stop-motion puppet here it is with the rest of the gang http://www.animezone.co.uk/forums/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=73 (mine is the small skeleton.) Unlike most stop-motion puppets he is not made out of plastercine, only the red bits in his eyes are plastercine so I could move them around! I think this is good because plastercine deteriorates and I will be able to keep my model as he won't deteriorate. Maybe he can star in the sequel if there is one or sit on Jonathan Ross's desk if he interviews me on his show. Maybe Jonathan Ross can be in the sequel too and we can stopmotionise his face like in the old Peter Gabriel Sledgehammer video. Yes. Maybe not. The model is made out of Fimo clay (a clay that is easy to sculpt, is coloured, you bake in the oven to make it hard and it is a bit like plastic when cool and you can paint it so I painted it.) The head is made out of fimo clay, with a hole in the bottom, which sits on a cocktail stick in the concealed fimo clay body. This enables me to turn the head from side to side. A piece of cooked (and therefore strengthened) platted wire was pushed through the body before cooking the fimo clay and two pieces of wire were pushed into the legs too before firing. This resulted in a much stronger structure than trying to superglue them in afterwards, instead being fused into the model. The boots were also made out of fimo clay and painted after baked. I sunk small strip magnets into each foot before baking as well, as the tables we film the models on are metal and magnetic. This helped him to stand up. I used the same wire and magnets I used in the first stop motion model which I managed to salvage from it by cracking it open in a vice. I decided to use the remains of the charred Mk.I skeleton in the film (as part of a pile of rubble in the film) as an in-joke. It kinda looks a bit like a Mickey mouse cremated by a martian ray-gun as I stacked the shoes on top of the head! The arms of the successful model were covered in duck tape and painted. The bandana was a piece of patterened fabric handkerchief and the stripey vest and trousers were made out of 3 scraps of material from the inside of one of Tom's old ties which I painted with acrylics.

We just finished filming all the scenes today. Although we started ages ago in theory it hasn't taken us 3 solid months to complete, infact, we've only had about 7 full days I reckon on the equipment on and off as it's been pretty booked up. Sooo... 3 minutes 50 seconds of film in seven days, plus around 3 minutes of screen-tests of each character I say we've animated it all quite speedily! We were only supposed to do 10 seconds per character, but you can't make a story in 50 seconds I'd say. There is a competition for all the films I hope we win! It will get shown in the student cinema on campus. I hope all the entries get shown and not just the winner.

I've finished all my work for my compulsory module which I didn't want to do (well I didn't want to do any of them but we have to pick one) Narrative writing so that's out of the way. Now all I need to do is get my arse into gear on the dreaded 3D modelling of the courtyard outside the animation studio and a portion of the student bar inside. I am finding the program a real pain in the neck, it never does what I want it to! I also have been given a 3D skeleton (no not the boney type, a simple wire frame of stick man minus the head) which I have to pose in about 10 different positions and animate between them. This shouldn't be too hard as computer animation programs tend to animate between the main frames you put in. I also have to animate it pushing and pulling something (I'm thinking of a simple giant block, Zelda style,) make it walk up a flight of stairs (which I have done albeit without any arm movement yet, not sure if that's required.) I need to finish all this 3D computer animation and modelling work first because that part of the course is due in before the Easter Holidays. The rest of the deadlines for other work is AFTER the Easter Holidays which is a bit wierd and stupid really, especially as we need to use the computers to finish some of it! I heard that the facilities would be open for the first week of the holiday, albeit rumour, even so I don't want to have to stay and work, or try to do work at home (if I can get hold of the programs, or doing the supporting research/sketchbook work), I would like a break for the holiday after all that is what holidays are all about! Some people have gone waaaaaaaay over the top in terms of attention to detail in the 3D computer model of the Uni. Someone's even put virtual Beer in the virtual Beer glasses! As for me I'm just taking sample photographs of the bricks, doors and windows and am sticking them on flat as pancakes to the outside of the walls I made out of polygon cubes stretched out into cuboids! I'm not bothered about getting a high mark, it's not worth the constant pain in the arse and stress, and boy does Maya cause a lot of stress! I almost hyperventilated with expletives the other day trying to get it to do the simplest thing. Flaming computers, they will be the death of us all! Why can't we just do flick books for our degree? We seem to spent more time putting our drawings together on them than actually drawing them!

Oh yeah I am also working on an interactive CD-Rom for preschoolers (no I didn't choose to do it we have to!) I have decided to do about cars funnily enough! It stars a cute little Lancia Stratos of course, and it does lots of headlight-blinking and wheel-turning when you click it and stuff. I've worked out a story for it, there will be a Boss Mustang in it too, and you have to help the driver repair their cars (ie-passing him tools and maybe selecting the right size and shape wheels to put on) then you have the old shape -recognition game where you have to put the tools back in their right places in the tool cupboard and more. It's a flash animation mainly because of the interactive side (where you can make things clickable so they play animations/the desired outcomes.) It'll require some computer scripting (argh!!!) flaming computers but should be fun to play in the end. Flash will also help save time having to redraw things. I've drawn each moving part seperately and can move them around in the program.
Anyway I think that'll do for now. I've rambled on enough.
Woo hoo it's finally Spring! It was so hot last night I couldn't get to sleep so I played True Crime streets of LA on Gamecube until 3:30am. I'm feeling a bit tired now. And hungry. Oh bugger I forgot to lift anything out of the freezer and into the fridge to defrost. Looks like its pasta AGAIN tonight...

[music |James Bond Live and Let Die (very quietly so as not to wake]

We ave started the clay-mation stop-motion animation project well we started it about 3 weeks ago but we have not done much because we are all lazy. We have been split into groups in my group there is me, the other tom (one of the other toms)Dee Me Kash and Mini Mike (who lives opposite the building that i am in and we like to play the nintendo yes like soul calibur 2 that is funny. WELL WOT IS IT ABOUT? well we had to pick a place and I said inside a wale i dont know why so yes we're doing it inside a wale and inside the wale there is a seaplane pilot who's plane got ated up by the wale and its got a little bit broken so he is fixing it meanwhile this skelebob pirate skeleton comes along and starts dismantleing his handiwork and it takes the pilot a while to figure out whats going on ( he has a bit of a clue when his dog brings him back a bone-arm in its mouth ha ha) then because the skeleton has only got one arm left he cannot break bits off the seaplane as quickly with one hand so he gets caught by the pilot meanwhile the zombie sponge (made up by michael) comes along and they see it and are scared and hold onto each other like in scooby doo and then they look at each other then the pilot looks back again at the screen and grins coz hes had an idea and he picks the zombie sponge up and squishes it into a little ball and rolls it at the naughty skeleton like a bowling ball and you hear a noise like when you have a strike in bowling and all the skittles fall over then you see the skeleton in pieces on the floor ha ha and he rolls his eyes the end i think tom wants the skeleton to steal the pilots plane and escape and then for some reason we see the skeleton working on a supermarket checkout for random ness. THE END. I have started making my skeleton out of styrofoam wire which kept snapping whenever i tried twisting 2 pieces together or looked at 2 pieces from 10m away or less so rob made it for me instead.

Afro Goblin! (and Chums) [Jan. 23rd, 2006|06:24 pm]
Well Hello Internet yesterday I stitched together a very long piece of paper or "SCROLL" that I had to do for animation last Semester before Christmas. Here it is if you want a looksy! http://www.deviantart.com/view/28036433/ Some of the characters featured on it are from "Afro Goblin" a cartoon I made up over the Summer holiday for a MANGA competition. I did not win anything oh well. You can read it at http://uk.geocities.com/thomas_007007/AfroGoblinComic/AGpage1.html it is it might find it quite funny it got pigs in it. Anyway as for the scroll. It is part of my Uni work from last Semester incase anybody was wondering what you have to do on an animation course. We were given an 11m long piece of paper and asked to entirely fill it with drawings which kinda flowed. Here it is. http://www.deviantart.com/view/28036433/ It starts in the bottom right hand corner and reads from right to left, bottom to top. (I would have put it all in a straight line but Paint shop pro wouldn't let me make it any wider than it is now, so I had to stack the images. Apologies for the badly stitchedtogetherness! And the poorly drawn cars for which I had no time to find reference pictures for! At 11 metres long it became a work of quantity over quality and I thought I would never get finished! The rose could have been better painted if I had some finer brushes at Uni but I had to make do with some fat chubby ones instead. You can tell where I was desperate to get to the end when I started drawing a huuuuuuge picture of Afro Goblin in black and white! When we were first given the piece of paper we had to draw someone from our course without looking at them, whilst looking at them with our left hand and without looking at them using our left hand (which explains the 3 giant green faces at the start which I had to somehow incorporate into the landscape after being told we had to complete the scroll in a continuous "narrative" manner.)

Birthday [Jun. 11th, 2003|03:31 pm]
yay today is my birthday. Nice i got zelda finally for gamecube and i got a purple evangelion big robot kit and blue submarine number 6 on dvd and the animatrix dvd and lots of chocolate and a new wallet. Mum took me to derby to have a look at my favourite science fiction shops there because i have not been there for ages but there was nothing i wanted ne way o crap left th gamecube on, link is sitting hiding in a barrel. Lol it is so good.
Anime club was great last night, so damn tense my neck was aching. Noir was as action packed as ever with loads of super cool stylish gun fights and sword fighting and it was probably at its best drawn and animated which was nice considering it was the grand finale. I actually felt sorry for the baddie woman who died in the end. I figured that the scruffy looking orphan girl depicted in a war torn country was a flashback of herself. I think she just became embroilled in this strange idealistic myth of noir, perhaps to bring peace to the world after the pain she suffered in war. (She said herself that if love can kill people then hatred/killing can save them) This coupled with the tapestries depicting the original noir (the two maidens of death she was trying to re-invent) defeating whole armies gave me the idea she wanted to use them for the purpose of peace.
I dunno im just talking crap but it was very very good. Excel saga was also much better than usual, much better drawn and theyd really splashed out on the animation budget for the grand finale (which was nice.) It also had two desert eagle handguns in it. Nice. Ghost in the shell was fairly complicated as ever but it had the makings of a serial killer thriller condensed into a half hour episode. Brilliant. The animation was tops and again, very nicely drawn. Very gory too which was also nice. Shame the lancia stratos didnt make an appearance. Oh well cant grumble lol.

The future's bright the futures ORANGENERDBEEREIS [Jan. 29th, 2003|04:45 pm]
[mood | cold]
[music |"Noir" Opening theme]

Well I aint updated for a while coz there wasnt much to say.
Sis has gone to Newcastle with Mum and Grandma so its just Papa and me at the moment, (I think they are coming back about 8) so ill make the use of the time i have on the computer now
Well yesterday the gnag conveniently left me at lunch time by myself to go to the shop anyway that evening was the anime club,
we finsihed love hina with the spring special which i thought really really sucked, they had got so lazy with the drawing and animation and could it get any dafter?
anyway then we watced NOIR!!!
NOIR KICKS ASS! ITS GOT GUNS IN IT, MEN IN BLACK, COOL MUSIC, lots of action (a sort of shoot now ask questions later approach) A COOL POCKET WATCH, great animation and style (quite cinematic) a very groovy stylish intro (very gunsmith cats esque)ITS SOOO COOL! just myy sort of anime ^_^ ITS DEFINATELY COMING OUT IN THIS COUNTRY THIS YEAR IM GONNNA GET IT RIGHT AWAY!!!! AND EXCEL SAGA, WELL THE SPACE BUTLER, MAN WITH AFRO WHO DRESSES LIKE LUPIN AND GET THIS; LOL AHAHHAHAHA PPP PEDRO LOL THE IMMIGRANT WORKER!!!! LOL CLASS!!! I HAVENT LAUGHED SO MUCH SINCE ERR I DUNNO WEN it has a similar style and similar sort of likeability of an old series we watched called Hyper Police. Its about a girl called Excel who gets wiped up by a lorry in the first few seconds (bad move lol!) shes told u cant start a show like that so shes allowed to start again but this time shes commisioned by this Lordy bloke to go kill all the manga artists with a rather large pointy sword...
just hope RGI isnt on the list *gulp*
Blimey LL wasnt at school today, think hes ill. Not like him to miss school lol, he missed aerobics! Hope hes well soon ¬ _¬
